Description
Nottoria is an agricultural village situated at the far end of a small valley, a ramification of the plain of S. Scolastica on the ancient road to the Tronto valley.
Divided into two parts the oldest lies in a precarious state with numerous abandoned buildings, the most recent has been subjected to interventions of re-development and new buildings have been constructed.
The village of Nottoria that stands on the scree joining the high Apennine relief and the plain of Norcia is part of a very special environment consisting of oaks under the looming mountain rampart.
The road that leads to Nottoria from nearby Savelli through the Vallone is lined with thick lines of isolated durmast oaks often scattered on the meadows and the surrounding farmland. Of particular note is the great Oak of Nottoria. Despite its venerable age of approximately over three centuries, the great Oak still stands strong with its immense dome of very green leaves, a gigantic, healthy, upright trunk, and its enormous branches without a single dry tip. Its sheltered position, the favourable soil and aspect, and the respect paid by man have all contributed to keeping it in perfect condition to modern times. The great Oak is not alone, as in the fields and even in the wood other examples tower impressively, even though they do not reach the same height.
