Description

Pescia is an ancient pastoral station for transhumant shepherding: in the past the lands of Falcia were able to welcome up to 17,000 sheep at a time.

Mentioned as a castle on the far edge of the plain of Santa Scolastica, the present settlement appears as a village built high on a rocky crag at a key point along the ancient early Middle Age path via the Via Salaria on the banks of the river Pescia. The place name of Colle Castiglione not far away suggests the presence of an older castle that was then moved further downhill.

The buildings stand on either side of a winding road up to the ruined church of Sant’Antonio.

The settlement is mentioned in 11th century documents. The layout of the cowsheds on the eastern boundary of the town is interesting, as they are quadrangular and stand separate from the houses.
