Scheggino - The Hemp Museum
Lenght: Km 5 (Round Trips)
Difficulty: Beginners
Duration: From 2 to 4 hours
Interesting: Historic - Cultural
To reach the lower part of Scheggino, known as “the village”, dating back from the 14th to the 16th century leave Piazza del Mercato and cross the iron bridge over the River Nera, under which you can see the landing place for canoes and rafting dinghies. Turn sharp right on to Via del Borgo, keep the canal supplying water to the mill on your right, then continue along Via del Pozzo initially on a tarmac road and then on a dirt track keeping the River Nera on your right. The road continues straight on as far as Osteria di Ceselli. The landscape is typical of the valley bottom with hygrophilous vegetation with stretches of overhanging forest (willows, poplars and the occasional alder of particular conservational interest). Another feature of the landscape that will particularly impress any botanist is the holm oak, an evergreen oak tree, typical of the maquis. At Osteria di Ceselli, the routes of the Via Francigena of St. Francis and the path of Pius 9th meet. From here the path soon reaches Ceselli where, on the other side of the stream, it is worth visiting the delightful Romanesque church of San Vito, patron saint who protected against rabies and who was dearly worshipped in the area. Retrace your steps to return to Scheggino.
How to get there
Exit from the SS 209 Valnerina at Scheggino and park your car in Piazza del Mercato.
